Toisin kuin nimestä voisi päätellä, “futur proche” ei ole rajoitettu välittömään lähitulevaisuuteen. Sitä voidaan käyttää useimmissa tilanteissa, joissa halutaan ilmaista ajatus tulevaisuudesta, ja ranskan kielessä sen käyttö on laajempi kuin esimerkiksi englannin “I am going to”.
